Abstract:
»Hazing is a stern issue in schools since hazing has permanent psychological damages. Researchers have demonstrated the prevalence and the impact of hazing which can be detrimental, yet very little has been done to explore the presence of such practices as trauma in literature. This research examines one of the books written by Sharon M. Draper, The Battle of Jericho (2003) to understand how characters are hazed as a form of trauma. The study is based on close reading, textual analysis and follows the theory of Trauma by Cathy Caruth which defines trauma as an experience that cannot be comprehended at all and alters memory and identity. The results show that hazing is a practice that causes scars among students that are permanent. It strikes them with fear, robs them of their sense of control and imposes silence on them. There are also scenes of friendship and stand-up in the novel. Draper puts her book forward as being more than a book of teens fighting. It is a caution against bad traditions which turn school violence into a norm. The research highlights the importance of students, teachers, and parents knowing about the psychological impacts of hazing. It demands a school culture based on care and safety. This research contributes to the understanding of the representation of trauma in young adult books as a result of its emphasis on hazing as the central traumatic event.«
